Cholesterol is a naturally occuring substance in all human beings. It is produced by the body for utilisation in its normal, proper functioning.

However, consumption of foods with high sugar, fat or oil content and drinking alcohol does great harm to a person.  Diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack and stroke are the result of such diets.

However, such diseases are preventable. It does require a definite willingness to work hard and sacrifice some desires on part of an individual because the effects of prevention do not last long because of the aging factor.

While eating less and eating properly planned food does impact cholesterol levels, the best method is to exercise. Regular exercises increases the heart rate, body metabolism and expels harmful oils which damage the health of a person.

It is important to consult a physician, especially by those who have not exercised before, to identify the proper form of exercise. People suffering from heart condition should not take up rigorous exercise but have to resort to low impact exercise such as walking, weight lifting or stretching.

On the recommendation of the physician a patient can indulge in high impact exercises such as running, aerobics, swimming and bicycling. The type of exercise regimen is based not only on the physical condition of the person but also on gender, age and weight.

The physician plans the exercise regimen and the person shows this to the fitness instructor who helps him to work out.  Such a professional exercise program is easier for the patient to follow.

Good results in terms of reduction in bad cholesterol and increase in good cholesterol as well as reduction in weight can be see within a period of a week or two.

The additional advantage of exercising is that there are no side affects unlike the use of drugs.

Sometimes an individual may not be able to enrol in a gym.  Such people can always pump those muscles or increase the heart rate through brisk walks early in the morning or before going to work.

It is a healthy habit to walk up one or two flights of stairs instead of using the elevator. Some offices and even hospitals encourage people to do so. One can even park away from the entrance to an office in a big parking lot, and hence walk a few yards more, thus contributing to more exercise.

It is recommended to drink lots of water during any exercise.  This will ensure that body has enough water and exhaustion due to dehydration is avoided. It is better to carry a water bottle rather than walking upto the fountain every few minutes.

While ensuring that a group activity happens with all members at the same place, this will also save a lot of time for the group as whole.

Everyone knows that exercise is good for health.  Only some do it regularly and lower their bad cholesterol levels in the body, live longer and enjoy life.  There are many who do nothing but still believe in the words - health is wealth.
