Reality shows have become really popular with the television viewers. The thrill of watching unscripted events that naturally unfold are holding the attention of the viewers. One such show that is encouraging people to become healthy is the "Biggest Loser".

This show comprises of contestents who are a group of overweight men and women.  This group goes on a work out and diet regimen for a week and at the end of each week one player who has lost the minimum weight will be eliminated.  After three such months of gruelling hard work outs, the person who loses the biggest number of pounds wins the $250,000 competition and begins a second life of health.

However, everyone does not have to participate in prize money competition for making life style changes. The proverbial "health is wealth" is literally true and is definitely worth more than any money in the world.

Exercise helps people burn more calories. This process burns off the food that is consumed and it has to be replaced if the body has to have energy to carry out its functions. A person has to eat food that has the right combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in order to repair damaged tissue, reenergise the body and also maintain low levels of cholesterol.

The types of food that are ideal after a workout.

Bread replenishes energy lost after a rigorous workout.  However regular bread contributes to high cholesterol and can be replaced with wheat bread that can be healthier.  Nuts are another good source of food that can lower the choleseterol.  A low fat peanut butter makes a good sandwish both for taste and also right nourishment.

Fruits are another source that can maintain low levels of cholesterol.  It is preferable to eat whole fruits rather than peeling away the skin or making juice. Scientific studies have proved that eating whole fruits keeps the natural fibers that help in good digestion.  Apple is one such fruit that can be relished. The saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' is quite applicable even today.

If one wants to save money on snacks, they can carry home made snacks to the gym for eating after the work out.  Some cut carrot sticks or sliced tomatoes can be packed in a plastic container and consumed after a refreshing bath, whether it is on the way to the office or while getting back home.

After getting back home, one must have more solid food that gives better nourishment. For example, fish or chicken cooked in the microwave or steamed, makes a good meal. Eating foods fried in cooking oil increases cholesterol levels and hence it is advisable to avoid preparing food in oil.

Adding a portion of vegetables with such a meal makes it healthy. Some studies have confirmed that garlic and onions can lower the cholesterol production in the liver. The night's meal can end with some yogurt for dessert while ensuring that the individual is food cravings are satisfied and at the same time he or she is feeling light.

One thing is sure, one cannot lower cholesterol overnight. By following a regimen of proper diet and adequate exercise, a person will not only be able to lose weight but also reduce the levels of cholesterol that causes dangerous ailments like high blood pressure, stroke or a heart attack.
